Default rooting? what are the benefits?

All i know is that rooting is the eqivalent of jailbreaking. So you can install apps which have been rejected from the app store. And install apps without going to the app store.
As well as msny other things, which i dont know. Sorry

But an android section would be good =) Especially as im considering getting a htc desire.

I googled rooting and this is what I got
Store apps on your sdcard instead of phone memory. So no more running out of space to install apps!
Get rid of those stupid demo apps your provider adds to your phone.
Turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot. Other devices can connect via wireless and share your phones internet
Take screenshots of your phone from your phone.
Better memory management, your phone will never slow down!
Overclock your phone, more speed! (If possible!)
Full backup ability. Backup your whole phone state. Restoring this backup puts your phone in the exact same condition as the backup.
Use 'Market Enabler' to access paid apps if currently unavailable in your country.
Hope this helps, I read it makes it into 720p camera or video

Some pros here. Nothing about cons though. By the way, I don't have one of these phones myself but is rooting the same as "downgrading" or "jailbreaking" by any chance?

i beleive so, im a bit wary of giving this a go as i read the word 'brick' in a thread somewhere, lol.

it would certainly be the most expensive brick i've ever 'created' lol

I read you can't brick a desire. If it didnt work the first time they just was starting over again. Probably at the start of it you back up your phone.

I got the desire with htc sense 2.2 and on vodafone, can this be rooted? does it need it?
The internet, when im logged onto it and have finished the only way I can log out is by the power button at the top of phone, is their an easier way? Thanks
