Dvd recorder & V+ box

Hi

my current dvd recorder is almost seen its day so I decided to go purchase a new one.i choose an LG drt389h after I connected all the cables.i was giving it a trial run manual recording OK timed recording not OK after an evening of reading the dvd user guide I gave up on the next day I called Currys support line (where I puchased item) I was put through to LG support explained to customer service person what was wrong he informed me that you cannot do timer recordings on a V+ box.so I returned the dvd recorder to currys only to be informed other makes and models were the same (I was also told the same thing in Tesco)?
So here is my dilemma I know the V+ box records two channels at a time but I follow a lot of motorsport at the weekend so having a dvd recorder was always a third channel option can anyone help me to get round this problem by either recommending a dvd recorder or a way of connecting the cables so I can record a third channel ?
