Someone bought brother-in-law's Saab 9000 with 60,000 on the clock and ran it as a taxi for the next 75,000 miles without problems.

Alternatively, all the taxis round here appear to be:
    • Skoda Octavia
    • Ten year old Merc's
    • Peugeot 406
The up-market corporate ones around here are Chrystler 300C's and S-class Mercs. Depends which end of the market you're after.

If you really fancy enjoying your job though, try:
The new Cafe (racer) Society: Virgin Limobikes.

Toyota's with D4D engines give bank busting fuel system problems once they get over the 100,000 mile mark. Get a pre D4D engined Avensis and it'll run for ever. Octavia's are very popular with cabies because of the VW build quality and parts are relatively cheap. Get a Superb for a bit of comfort.

And you're going to need plenty of parts for those cars. And remember if you're thinking about using a Ford, while they guarantee the timing belt up to 100,000 miles, the tensioner is not guaranteed at all. This has a plastic pulley which has a habit of going well before the belt.

I've been using a Mondeo for the last 2 years,I've had a few problems, nothing major I would recommened them,Skoda's,most japanese makers all make good solid cars for taxiing, try a few before you buy is the best advice I can give cause there is no point in spending lots of time in a car you don't like.
