AOC is more popular in the field of computer monitors than in television. But with the A42HD84, AOC gives us a budget-priced, 42-inch, high-resolution plasma that costs less than most 32-inch LCD. It’s price and design however, is overshadowed by its mediocre image quality and performance.
Its rendering of colors are weak and the display of miniature details are not that good in particular. Some people might find this television a bargain. But a good buyer who always wants to get what he is paying for – in terms of quality and performance – are better off scouring the market for another brand and model.
The television virtually has no features, limited connectivity and very few options for adjusting the picture that it wouldn’t be half the product that other companies are selling in the market. The good point for this though is that changing the setting via remote is a very simple matter. With less features and functionalities, setting the sound or tweaking the performance is not that complicated at all. Surprisingly, the speakers even sound acceptable.
Extras like picture-in-picture mode aren’t a part of the package with this budget model.
When it comes to different inputs, the set doesn’t even comes close to giving you what you need. It only includes standard inputs like composite, component, and S-Video. What’s even more disappointing is that the set doesn’t include any HDMI input. Almost all HDTV’s with this size and resolution include HDMI for accepting high-definition content. However, the A42HD84 does include DVI input, which makes it a natural match for a PC.
Overall, while the AOC A42HD84 is one of the most-affordable 42-inch plasmas on the market, its lacking features and inaccurate color makes it less of a value. What’s more, AOC has still not reached the HDTV market as this model is more suited to a conference room than to a living room. It would serve better as a huge computer monitor rather than a high-definition television.
