sony-kdl40ve5Manufacturers now are becoming more and more conscious about the environment. Well, consumers are much more. So when a company tries to create a product which does not only give excellent performance but helps the environment, then you have yourself a winner.

As for TVs, as long as it’s plugged in, it will consume power, even if the panel is turned off. Modern HDTVs enter a standby mode when their power is turned off, a state that keeps them ready for fast initialization the next time you sit down to watch a show, but that also continues to draw energy.

The Sony KDL40VE5 features a new innovation by Sony, a zero-watt Energy Saving Switch. By pressing the Energy Saving Switch on the side of its panel, you enable the KDL-40VE5 to consume zero power when in standby mode, effectively eliminating unnecessary power consumption. Complementing the zero-watt Energy Switch is the VE5 series’ Presence Sensor.

Using advanced sensor technology, the KDL-40VE5 detects when you’ve been out of the room for a pre-determined amount of time?—?choose between five, 30, or 60 minutes?—?and automatically turns the backlight off to conserve energy. In turn, the volume will remain on for a further 30 minutes while you’re away before the HDTV powers off completely, allowing you to continue to listen to the audio from the next room.

Further, LightSensor technology monitors ambient-light levels in your viewing area and automatically adjusts backlight intensity. Not only is image clarity optimized, but power use is minimized when light levels are low. Finally, responding to the video content you’re watching, the KDL-40VE5′s Dynamic Backlight Control also makes automatic energy-saving and performance-raising adjustments to backlight intensity. VE5 backlight technology is your signal to Go Green with LCD.

But hey, let’s also talk performance. The Sony KDL40VE5 features Motionflow technology that uses 120Hz processing. Motionflow technology is able to serve up the fast action of sports and movies with a level of smoothness and realism.

The KDL-40VE5′s full HD 1080p LCD screen enhances your home video experience by displaying 1920 x 1080p images?—?the highest resolution available?—?thereby also making it a perfect match for taking full advantage of Blu-ray Disc and PlayStation content. video processing is a key element, and when it comes to processing, the KDL-40VE5 uses nothing less than an engine. Sony’s BRAVIA Engine 2 technology is a fully digital video processor that employs a collection of unique algorithms to significantly reduce video noise and produce sharp, vibrant, lifelike images through which a 1080p-resolution panel reaches its full potential.

As a leader in products with HDMI connectivity, Sony has created BRAVIA Theatre Sync technology to go beyond simple audio and video transmission. When you combine your new KDL-40VE5 with a select number of other BRAVIA audio and video products, control functions will also be transmitted via the HDMI cable. With “One Touch Play”, operations that took several steps are reduced to one.

Somewhat expensive; dark areas tinged bluish; less uniform screen; must engage dejudder to enable antiblur; uninspired design.

Anyone having problems with the Sony KDL40VE5 shutting off and then back on only on digital (3.1,4.1,5.1 …) channels?
I have this model and it keeps shutting off and back on but only on the High definition channels.
I am not using a cable box. Our cable company sends the digital channels over the same line.
I set a HD tv next to my Sony KDL40VE5 and ran through a 2 way splitter. The sony shut off and the other set was OK. Both tv’s were set on 3.1 channel. This is the second TV with the same problem. Any ideas ???? Anyone !
