Archos, a global consumer electronics hardware manufacturer with an office in Southampton, has announced Archos TV+, a digital set top recorder which is set to rival Apple TV.

Archos TV+ is available in 80GB and 250GB hard disk versions. The device comes with a range of connectivity options including Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, Ethernet and there is also an HDMI connection for outputting 720p high-definition signals to HDTVs.

Archos claims that TV+ is the only DVR to integrate seamlessly with a portable device. It is compatible with Archos’s Generation 5 personal media players, allowing media to be streamed around the home.

A number of plug-ins are available to add functionality, including Flash support and a web-browser plug-in which transforms the TV+ into an internet-enabled device.

The unit comes with an easy to use, integrated TV programme guide and a QWERTY remote control.

Archos TV+ offers a wider range of connections than Apple’s TV, providing correctly scaled standard-definition outputs as well as HD, making it compatible with traditional TV.

The 80GB version should be available soon, priced at £179, while the 250GB version will around £80 more.
