Sony has announced the world’s first TV based on OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology.
The Sony XEL-1 television has an 11in OLED screen which measures just 3mm thick. This is slimmer than either a plasma or LCD panel, as OLED technology does not require a backlight.
The TV has a resolution of 960×540, but will accept up to 1080p video images.
OLED materials are carbon based and emit light when subjected to an electric current. They are energy efficient and enable the manufacture of displays which are both slim and lightweight.
OLED panels provide high-quality, fast moving images, suitable for sports events, but at the moment size is a limitation.
