The golf channel is bunkered

by David Allen

It lasted less than five years but the Golf Channel UK has now closed down. The channel which was available via satellite and cable TV and owned by the successful sports group JJB stopped broadcasting and with no plans to the revive the channel, it has to be a disappointment to many of the viewers that watch the channel.

However there would seem to be plans for a general sports channel being developed by the JJB group, so there is the possibility that golf will be integrated into the nee sports channel.

The following points were given by the management of the channel:

1) Cost of “good” quality programming. Yes we could have got cheaper programming but not without denigrating the viewer experience

2) Lack of availability of good programming and rights.

3) The commercial revenues that were projected over the coming years.

It’s a pity that this has ended, but in TV nothing really ever ends, they always come back in some form or another.
