BT Moves up to100Mbit/s for residential users.

by Alan Harten

Beginning this August, 2008 residents of a large, 1000 acre new build housing development in Kent, will become the first non commercial, clients of BT’s new, super fast, Openreach 100Mbit/s broadband service.

BT announced its plans to install fibre-optic cable throughout the new development, instead of traditional copper wire installation. But what will this mean to the consumer?

According to Openreach, the residents of Ebbsfleet Valley will enjoy, the fastest headline speed available in the whole of the UK. This in turn, will not only give them super fast internet, but also a range of new services such as multiple HDTV channels, which can even be viewed simultaneously.

There will be HDTV gaming, smaller downloads such as music, will be just about instant.

BT has stated, that it plans to widen its use of purely fibre optic cable in new build sites that it finds suitable. The governments plans to increase new build housing developments to a total of three million new homes by 2020, should give the company ample room for expansion in this market.

In a statement by Mr Steven Robertson, chief executive officer of Openreach, said: “This is our first deployment of fibre rather than copper to residential customers on a new build site. It will enable communication providers to gauge what demand exists for very high speed broadband, and to assess what commercial models may be appropriate in the future.”

BT has also committed to increasing broadband speeds for connections using traditional copper wire installation, and this spring, will begin introducing new services for domestic customers of up to 24Mbit/s.
