DECT cordless phone or VoIP?

I’m currently looking to improve on how I use the phone in my home office - at present, it’s just a normal corded telephone and isn’t suited to an environment where I sometimes need to be elsewhere in the house.

I’m looking at a couple of options - for example, setting up a system of cordless phones around the home seems a good idea, ie, a single base station with a couple of additional handsets, so that when the phone rings there’s not such a big rush to grab the receiver.

If I go this route then I would almost certainly be looking at a DECT digital handset which should offer a lot of extended functionality on top of being able to use the phone anywhere around the home office.

BT already offer quite a range of digital DECT cordless phones, not least the BT Reveal, Studio, Synergy, Calypso, and the curiously named Mango. In fact, the range becomes confusing because there’s no clear distinction between the different types of model.

While I figure any individual choice should probably suit me fine, I’m frustrated by the lack of information on the differences.

Another problem is that I’m not sure whether to aim for a general DECT phone - or whether I should aim for a VoIP system for business telecoms.

Most people have probably already heard of Skype, and there are certainly plenty of other VoIP providers out there. Before even deciding on which one to go with, I need to ask myself.

So my choice at present seems focused on a cordless phone or a VoIP phone.

However, I have been keeping an eye out on the Seimens gigaset handsets, which can offer both landline and VoIP functionality.

Again, there’s plenty of choice, but unlike the BT DECT phones, the differences between Seimens handsets are usually clearly marked.

I’m going to take a closer look at these and see what I can find - but in the meantime, if anyone has tried either a DECT, VoIP, or hybrid DECT/VoIP system, feel free to let me know your experiences - negative and positive. :)
