Internet security debated by Lords

October 7, 2008

It was only last year when the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee come up with a report which labeled the internet the “Wild West”.

However all or most of the recommendations were ignored or deemed unnecessary by the government.

The committee is sitting once more and this time the government are said to be open to suggestions, following the increase in potential ID fraud and thefts that have been occurring over the last year or so.

One of the suggestions will be a specialist unit devoted this sort of activity. A new e-crime police unit is going to be set up whose brief will be to cover these online crimes.

Yet the one crime that really scares people is online bank fraud, and the committee have failed to recommend that these crimes should be reported to the police, rather than the banks themselves.
