Freeview channel slot auction

by David Allen

The UK’s most popular way of watching free digital TV, Freeview, is looking to sell another channel slot on the platform, and if it goes as well as the last time there could well be a multi million pound bidding war between broadcasters keen to see their channel join the current line up.

Arqiva who own two of the six slots available on Freeview is selling the slot. They are expecting the new owner to be ready to go by February of next year.

The deadline for bids will end on the 22nd October and they are looking to announce the lucky winner sometime in the New Year.

The reason why this is important is because with limited space for expansion an available channel slot on Freeview is rare.

The last time this happened, Channel 4 and Five were locked in the bidding, with Channel 4 coming away the winner after paying an estimated £10 million.
