4th HD channel by 2010

by David Allen

The media regulator Ofcom has confirmed that by 2010 there could be another terrestrial high definition channel, bringing the total up to four, but demand could mean that there is some serious competition for this space.

Ofcom will begin the process of accepting applications for the services on multiplex B; this is being reconfigured as the digital switchover happens.

With HD services from the BBC, ITV and Channel Four starting in March, the obvious choice would be Five.

However, it is not a foregone conclusion that Five will be getting the space without any competition, because there could be opposition from ITV, Channel Four, S4C and Teletext who are all interested in expanding their HD offerings.
