O2 has reported that 166 million messages were sent over its UK network during the 24 hours ending 7.30am on New Year’s Day.
This breaks the operator’s previous record for the number of texts sent in a 24-hour period.
An average of 1,900 text messages were sent every second by the operator as Brits turned to texting as the preferred medium for sending New Year’s greetings.
Prior to the New Year, Orange predicted that it was expecting to handle around 112 million SMS and 900,000 picture messages on New Year’s Eve, with another 110 million texts expected on New Year’s Day.
Assuming that other major operators handled similar numbers of texts, over half a billion text messages were sent around the UK in a single day.
That’s more than eight texts per person.
