BSkyB’s ITV share going to RTL?

by David Allen

With the slice of ITV owned by satellite broadcaster BSkyB still hanging in the balance, rival broadcaster RTL, owner of satellite channels and terrestrial channels like Five, is waiting in the wings to snap it up and then maybe go on to take over ITV entirely.

BSkyB holds a 17.9 per cent stake in ITV.

It was said to have bought the holding in order to prevent cable rival Virgin Media taking over ITV, but this prompted a legal battle to make the satellite operator reduce its holding in ITV to 7.5 per cent.

It seems now that should BSkyB decide that enough is enough, then RTL are favourites to snap it up and bring ITV into their stable.

There are even rumours that BSkyB could walk away with Five as payment for the stake in ITV.
