The project that we have come to know as Kangaroo was blocked by the Competition Commission today, despite hopes that it would be up and running by the spring.
The project aimed to show around ten thousand hours of programming, funded through advertising.
Kangaroo attracted several complaints from other broadcasters like BSkyB, Virgin Media and several other VoD suppliers, who felt that it was unfair to competition, as it would have exclusive rights to programming.
The Competition Commission seems to have upheld this view.
Although remedies were suggested, such as changing the way revenues were generated, the Commission still felt that Kangaroo would threaten competition in the VOD market.
