The super fast broadband top 20

by David Allen

Twice a year the EU releases global ranking figures for countries that have a market penetration of over one per cent with Fibre to the Home (FTTH) broadband services.

Unfortunately the UK does not yet qualify, despite cable provider Virgin Media rolling out the super fast broadband service that will eventually service around forty per cent of UK households.

The reason for this is that the EU does not count Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) services like the service that BT is planning and as for Virgin Media, its service will not count because its infrastructure doesn’t meet the criteria either.

As expected the leading countries are South Korea (44%), Hong Kong (28%), Japan (27%) and Taiwan (12%), although in terms of overall connections it is Japan that leads with 13.2 million, with the USA and China coming in with 6.05 million and 5.96 million respectively.

  1. Virgin should never win any awards for broadband unless its crappiest service of all time, with their pointless speed caps at all times of the day.
