Mobile satellite previewed

February 23, 2009

A hybrid satellite terrestrial mobile network has been demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Solaris Mobile used a fleet of five Mercedes E class cars, on loan from hire company Eurocar, to demonstrate how satellite TV can be received effectively in a moving vehicle.

The company’s payload is due to be launched on board the Eutelsat W2A and it is looking to sell satellite TV for cars, next generation handsets and other means of transport.

People at the event were driven around in the cars where they experienced the technology provided by Quantum receivers and Calearo antennas fitted in the vehicles.

Handsets provided by Sagem Wireless and Archos demonstrated satellite TV such as Euronews and Eurosport.
