Virgin Media says UK not behind on next-gen broadband

February 24, 2009

Following the recent release of the top twenty next-generation network connected countries where the UK failed to get a mention, it seems that cable provider Virgin Media have a very different view and feels that the UK is far from lagging behind the rest of the country.

When the table was produced the UK was lagging behind even fellow European states such as France and Sweden, but Virgin Media has done a lot of work on its fibre optic cable network, which will be able to deliver 50 Mbps to over twelve million homes - around half of the UK population - by the end of this summer.

On the other BT is still in the planning stages for its fibre optic service.

This is not likely to be completed until 2012, when it will be able to offer a similar service to Virgin Media.
