Freeview will launch HD in 2010

March 13, 2009

Freeview hopes to be offering a full high definition TV service in time for the football World Cup in 2010.

It is Freeview users who have opted for the Freeview+ personal video recorder who are the prime customers for this service.

Freeview has estimated that there are around fourteen million HD ready television sets already in the UK televisions set market.

Around a quarter are already customers of the Freeview free to air service.

A Freeview HD set top box is going to cost around £100, which is twice as much as the Sky HD equipment, but with Sky HD there is the subscription and extra HD fee to take into consideration.

It is hoped that the HD service will reach between thirty and forty per cent of the UK population by the time the world cup kicks off.
