When BBC4 planned to produce a drama about the creation of penicillin, they needed to make sure that they had some heavy hitters on board otherwise the drama was likely to fizzle out into oblivion.
Which is why they have managed to get the Wire’s Dominic West to star as Professor Howard Florey in the BBC4 drama ‘Breaking the Mould’, a ninety minute drama that will tell the story of how the professor and his team at oxford university worked through the ups and downs of making penicillin into a usable medicine, during the early days of world war two.
Ben Stephenson has commissioned the drama, along with the BBC4 controller Richard Klein.
Filming began last week in London, and the programme will air in the summer.
It will be directed by Peter Hoar and produced by Pier Wilkie.
