Freeview to get iPlayer

May 11, 2009

According to reports, people are spending less time going out and more time staying in to watch more television.

Freeview has been working with the BBC in an attempt to get the iPlayer catch up service onto the set top boxes providing the Freeview service.

This should be happening around the end of the year, but even so the introduction of the iPlayer will still beat the release of Project Canvas, the joint video on demand service being put together by the BBC, ITV and BT.

Adding the iPlayer to the Freeview service will also mean that consumers faced with choosing a digital television service now have more to think about than just pay TV or free to view TV services, as the BBC iPlayer introduces a new dimension to the Freeview service.
