New HDMI could give iPod HD

by David Allen

A new device that will provide high definition transfer for the iPod and other similar devices, has become more of a reality with a prototype mini HDMI that offers the same sort of image transfer quality as the larger connection cables.

An HDMI port is one of the only ways for transferring 1080p visuals to the screen, but as with many of these ports it is simply too large to be placed into a portable device, such as iPods and mobile phones.

The idea is to create a smaller connector that still manages to accommodate the required nineteen pins, but with a 10.2 Gbit bandwidth and measuring only 6.4 mm x 2.8 mm which, as it happens, will be perfect for portable devices such as iPods and mobile devices.
