philips-42pfl7403d1Philips is a great company who has been around for several years now. Of course, we all know that one their main products is in the field of audio and video entertainment. So, it is quite surprising that the Philips 42PFL7403D/F7 is not up to par with what most people expect of their company.

The Philips 42PFL7403D/F7 has some nice touches for a low-cost HDTV, but it suffers in a crucial area - image quality.

There’s a lot to like about the Philips 42PFL7403D/F7. You have a 42-inch HDTV with USB-based multimedia capabilities. The Philips HDTV does a fantastic job of simulating surround sound, and some intelligent thinking obviously went into designing the remote. However, its performance on image quality makes it an unattractive product for consumers.

Aside from image quality, the set also does not handle skin tones very well. It gives a reddish tint to skin tones. But that is not the worst the set can do. It also had problems handling movement. You can see lots of blurs and pixelations on fast moving scenes.

You can’t expect a TV’s speakers to deliver true surround sound, but the 42PFL7403D/F7 simulates surround sound as well as any HDTV out in the market. If Philips wasn’t able to do well with the video, they definitely made up for it on the set’s audio.

Thanks to its built-in USB port, the 42PFL7403D/F7 can play photo slideshows (JPEG files only) and MP3 audio files from any USB-based drive. And in case you want to watch TV without waking the family, it has a headphone jack as well.

The Philips 42PFL7403D/F7 scores with its price tag and attentive touches, but unimpressive image quality undermines what is otherwise a pretty good low-cost HDTV.
