Sky Sports favourites for FOTA breakaway series

by David Allen

The world of F1 is in disarray at the moment, with the constructors seeking a slowing down of the changes being imposed by the sports ruling body, the FIA.

This breakdown in communications has led the constructors to think about breaking away from F1 and forming a rival series.

This means that a new series, that has the likes of Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Toyota, Brawn, Renault and Torro Rosso, will be looking for TV coverage.

Step in Sky Sports, as the pay to view sports broadcaster has emerged as being the favourite to secure the TV rights for the new series, should it go ahead.

In the past Sky Sports has come up with a TV deal for breakaway sports organisations and there is no reason to assume that on this occasion the broadcaster would not do the same.

  1. This, I think, would be a bad move on FOTA’s part. They currently have around 90% of fans behind them, but if they look to pay-per-view coverage I can see that support dropping significantly.
On the other hand, if this is just a 1 year stop-gap until the FIA championship falls apart and leaves the BBC free to cover the breakaway championship from the 2nd year onwards then they may just get away with it
