One of Sony’s least expensive LCD model is the KDL-52V5100. Even so, it still packs in quite a punch with its 120Hz processing that to some brands, can only be found on their higher-end products. It does lack the interactive extras and design complexities of the more expensive Sony sets but it performs well enough and it includes most of the most common features that an average user deems important.

As with other low-end Sony models, the KDL-52V5100 doesn’t have much on the looks department. Its basically a square set with a glossy black frame around the screen. Below is a black strip that fades to a mirror finish, providing a minor accent. The area below the screen is further thickened by the horizontal speaker bar with a matte-black finish.

Beauty is one factor in choosing a TV set, but of course, it is not the most important one. Yes, the KDL-52V5100 does not have all the interactive bells and whistles of the company’s step-up sets, but it does come with 120Hz processing, which enables improved motion resolution, therefore, less blurring. Another feature is Sony’s MotionFlow dejudder processing.

Other picture controls are relatively extensive for an entry-level model. Sony also offers three global adjustable picture modes and a fourth, called Custom, that’s independent per input. In addition to the three color temperature presets, full white balance controls are available to help customize the grayscale. More advanced settings include gamma and a Game Mode to disable video processing, along with dubious extras like Live Color, Clear White and Advanced Contrast Enhancer that we left turned off for our evaluation.

As for connectivity, the KDL-V5100 series is pretty solid in this department. There are three HDMI inputs on the side panel and another one at the back. This is a good number for a TV at this price range. The position of these connections are very convenient so count this as a plus for this set. At the back, the set includes two component-video and a smattering of audio jacks while the side panel is completed with one PC input

Overall performance for the KDL-V5100 is very good. It exhibited very good picture quality for the price. In some cases, one can say that it even surpassed the performance of some of Sony’s more expensive sets. The set displayed deep black levels and relatively accurate colors.

Of course, the KDL-V5100 can’t match a plasma when it comes to black levels. But the set was solid for an LCD in this category. In bright scenes the V5100 performed well in this category, thanks to its accurate grayscale and primary and secondary colors. As it came with Sony’s 120Hz refresh rate, the set’s video processing is also very good.

All in all, the Sony KDL-V5100 is a very good deal. It has a mid-range price with over achieving capabilities and performance.
