Astra gets German TV boost

The German media company ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG will begin to broadcast its three main channels, Sat.1, ProSieben and kabel eins, in HD as part of the new HD+ platform on Astra at 19.2 degrees East satellite.

These channels are part of the free to view TV group and they will join RTL and Vox from RTL Germany as from the beginning of 2010.

This addition of high definition channels will take the total number of HD+ channels to five, but they will also be joined by ARD and ZDF which will also be making regular HD broadcasts.

Currently there is a choice of HD content in Germany, with free to view services offered from Arte HD and Annixe HD, as well as the pay to view offerings from Sky Deutschland with seven HD channels, although there is some doubt as to whether or not the new HD channels will be available on its set top boxes.
