Sky’s football coverage under threat from BT

July 28, 2009

The broadband and telecom provider, BT, is challenging Sky Sports’ dominance of the live Premier League football market.

However, BT is not looking to steal the rights for the games from Sky Sports, but has a different plan that involves the regulator Ofcom’s review of the pay TV market.

According to the new chief executive of BT Vision, Marc Watson, he expects to be able to offer customers of BT Vision the full Sky Sports Premier League package at a knock down price, starting with the 2010/11 season.

This ruling, if it gets past all of BSkyB’s legal obstacles, will also open the door to Virgin Media and Top Up TV.

In fact a deal such as this could have long lasting effects on the entire pay TV sector.
