Samsung to launch Europe-wide app store

Samsung is set to launch a mobile application store for handset owners across Europe.

The move, an attempt to emulate the success of the popular iPhone App Store, expands the beta version of the Samsung store launched earlier this year in the UK.

The store will offer applications for Symbian and Windows Mobile powered handsets, with users paying for applications via PayPal or credit card rather than credit from their mobile phone bill.

In preparation for the launch, Samsung this week unveiled an Application Seller Site, enabling developers to upload applications to the store and sell them for a nominal $1 (61p) fee.

Developers will also be allowed to sell their applications in other app stores.

“We are aiming to achieve a win-win business model for end users, mobile operators and industry influencers, such as developers and content providers,” said Kanghyun Kwon, vice president of Samsung’s content services team.
