The terrestrial broadcaster, Five, has finally decided to join in with the other broadcasters on the IPTV joint venture, Project Canvas.
The object of Project Canvas is to develop the technical side of IPTV and create a standard that can be delivered to the viewer through broadband enabled set top boxes.
Channel Four is the only broadcaster not to have made the decision to get involved in the joint venture with the BBC, BT and ITV, although it is hard to imagine Project Canvas without Channel Four’s involvement.
Project Canvas is assumed to be costing around £24 million to develop over a five year period, with each partner paying a share of that cost.
According to Five, Project Canvas is an essential tool for the long term future of free to view TV.
