Twitter used to herd botnets

August 17, 2009

It looks as if cyber criminals are using the popular micro blogging service Twitter as a base to command and control botnets.

It has been found that a network of infected PCs have been getting instructions through a Twitter account.

This can be done easily and very effectively through the status messages on Twitter.

According to Jose Nazario from Arbour Networks, the messages are sent out as new links to contacts, but these actually contain new commands or other orders to download and run.

The particular Twitter account in question is “Bot Herder” which has been closed down.

According to Twitter this is the first time that the network has been used for the purpose, although it is not the first time that twitter has experienced security issues.
