Schools in Hertfordshire get broadband boost

August 24, 2009

Schools across Hertfordshire could be benefiting from a high speed broadband network being installed by the cable company NTL: Telewest Business, which is now part of the Virgin Media group of businesses.

The cable provider is investing £5.5 million in an upgrade to the Hertfordshire Grid for Learning (HGFL).

This is a privately run network, which has been created to link schools, education support centres and children’s residential homes throughout the region.

Once this upgrade has been completed it will provide services such as e-learning resources for help and assistance to around 178,000 pupils at home or at school.

According to the Technical Infrastructure Manager at Hertfordshire County Council, around five hundred and seventy two sites will benefit from an improved service that will allow online teaching and the provision of learning resources.
