While the UK telecom operators in both the fixed line andmobile sectors struggle, the broadband sector is still growing, albeit very slowly.

According to the market update for the first quarter of 2009 by Ofcom, in the telecom sector fixed line revenues fell by 4.4 per cent on the year and mobile revenues fell by 3.7 per cent over the same period.

However, when it comes to broadband services it is a different story, with the UK household and small business broadband connections rising by 1.6 per cent to 17.6 million, which works out at around 8.4 per cent on the year.

The rise in broadband connection has been put down to the amount phone lines being switched to local loop unbundling (LLU) connections.
