BT customers victims of bill scam

September 21, 2009

The telecom regulator, Ofcom, is warning customers of a potential phone scam where callers said to be from BT are contacting broadband and phone users claiming to be chasing up urgent work that needs doing to their phone line.

According to Ofcom, this group of fraudsters is saying that the cost of this ‘digital upgrade’ is only £6, but if this fee is not paid immediately, the phone line will be disconnected.

A small charge to prevent the phone line from being cut off could be incentive enough to make some customers pay up by providing their credit card or bank details, and that is the core of the scam!

Both BT and Ofcom have informed the police of this matter and are warning customers not to give any bank or card details over the phone.
