ITV’s regional news losses could be £64 million

September 23, 2009

The media regulator Ofcom has revealed that the regional news services provided by ITV could be losing around £64 million a year by 2012.

The provision of regional news has been the subject of discussion for a while now, but apart from sharing facilities with the BBC regional news centres it seems that nothing much has changed and the problem is even getting worse.

Ofcom has been calling for a consortium of independent news providers to deliver the regional news services by the time that the full digital switchover has taken place.

Within the Digital Britain report there is provision for around £130 million a year to be diverted from the TV Licence fee revenues to fund the independent regional news centres, but the BBC is against this idea.
