Twitter won’t carry adverts yet

Co-founder Biz Stone (with a name like that, he really should be an action film hero) used the 140: Twitter Conference to deliver the message that the site has no plans to use advertising; not yet, anyway.

He said that Twitter’s financial status was healthy, and there would be no need to look at possible ad revenues in the near future.

Instead the company’s focus is to be directed into new features for the site, such as commercial accounts.

These paid-for accounts will apparently have access to premium options, including some form of analytical tools that could allow companies to collect data on their followers.

Which might well prove a controversial issue for the champions of online privacy, naturally.

Only time will tell what Twitter has up its sleeve, but it certainly needs to find a business model to set it up for longer term success.
