Twitter to roll out friends lists

by Darren Allan

Micro-blogging service Twitter has begun testing a much requested feature: Lists.

Not shopping lists, but groups of contacts. Users will be able to compile lists of Twitter accounts in any category they wish: Their friends, work colleagues in the Rome office, or perhaps people of the same nationality as them, for example. Anything, basically.

Twitter is going to make these lists public by default (although you’ll be able to make them private if you want). Lists you’ve created will be linked from your profile, so other users can subscribe to them.

Nick Kallen, the Project Lead on the feature, said that “lists have the potential to be an important new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts.”

It shouldn’t be too long before we see lists unleashed on Twitter.
