Entanet calls for clampdown on mis-selling

October 23, 2009

The regulator Ofcom is under pressure from broadband provider Entanet to act on the serious issue of mis-selling broadband and phone services.

Ofcom has already started a consultation on this matter following a similar move from BT, which suggested that consumers could be given a PIN that only they know, and whenever an account switch takes place or a new account is opened they must enter the PIN before the system accepts the order.

However, a PIN and the existing MAC system are still open to abuse from firms that are willing to bend the rules and there are instances where MAC codes have been obtained without the customer’s knowledge or permission.

The problem with MAC and, if was brought in, a PIN system, is that it is the ISP that still holds the power.
