Download game sales to outperform retail in three years

The UK National Gamers Survey 2009 has produced some interesting findings regarding the average UK gamer.

The survey, which was conducted by TNS and Gamesindustry.com, revealed that 73% of respondents said they regularly played games, with many admitting gaming is their favourite pastime ahead of TV and the Internet.

It also found that a quarter of gamers had downloaded content for a game, although only 7% had downloaded a full game on a console. PC owners were more likely to have downloaded a full game with a figure of 14%.

The most interesting revelation, however, was the estimation that in just three years time, download sales will outperform those of retail outlets.

Given the low figures the survey stated for full game downloads, that seems to be a rather bullish call to say the least. Game shops across the country will certainly be hoping that’s the case, or they best get cracking on the online side of their business.
