Satellite broadband will be used in Ireland in order to provide complete coverage, even in areas where broadband is currently an impossibility.
The Tooway satellite broadband service, from the comms firm Eutelsat, will be supplied through Satellite Broadband Ireland and is expected to reach around 223,000 customers, which represents around five per cent of the market.
There are qualification criteria in place to make sure that only those consumers without any chance of broadband from any other source are offered the service.
Currently the Tooway satellite broadband system offers connection speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps.
For this service the price will be £17.87 per month.
With satellite broadband, the installation and equipment costs generally work out at a few hundred pounds, but under this scheme the cost of installation and equipment has been reduced to around £45.
