Space Invaders blast Mac files

Symantec has flagged up a Space Invaders style game available for the Mac as a security threat.

When you play the game, for every poorly rendered alien you blast, a file is deleted from your hard drive, beginning with the documents folder and moving on elsewhere.

However, the game makes it clear with a big flashing pre-start warning – complete with red letters – that it will delete files.

The point is that it’s art, or perhaps it’s supposed to be. The designer is possibly saying that we shouldn’t be killing aliens, as we’re only hurting ourselves by doing so, a process depicted by the file deletion.

Anyway, you’d have to be a bit of an idiot to actually play it, although Symantec reckon it’s a danger as the game could be modified to remove the warning screen.

And of course, there are people who don’t read instructions and warning screens (or indeed anything at all).

So, is it truly malware, or is it art? Well, one thing we can be sure of is that it’s crap either way.
