Avanti ready for countdown

November 6, 2009

Satellite broadband in the UK is about to blast off, with the satellite broadband operator Avanti reporting that its equipment has arrived safe and sound at the Indian Space Research Organisation assembly plant.

This is the last stage before the Avanti Highly Adaptable Satellite (HYLAS) equipment is launched into orbit, where it will be able to offer areas of the UK broadband for the first time in many cases.

Of course, satellite broadband has been around for years, but equipment and installation costs have always put the consumer off.

However, with the Digital Britain report and the government’s pledge to provide a minimum broadband service throughout the UK, costs will have to come down.

The payload will be integrated into the launch vehicle over the next few months and the estimated launch date will be sometime during the second quarter of 2010.
