Publisher Activision has released details of record breaking sales figures for its shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
It seems that many people have heard the call of duty, with UK and US sales of a whopping $310 million on the first day of release (Tuesday of this week).
Activision is calling it the biggest launch in the history of entertainment. Almost five million copies of the game were sold in the UK and US, according to Activision’s own estimates.
Even Grand Theft Auto IV only managed 3.6 million units shifted in its first twenty four hours (only being a relative term, of course).
“The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium,” said Mike Griffith, Activision’s CEO.
“The shattering of these entertainment records is a testament to the compelling, cinematic and uniquely engaging experience that the Call of Duty brand delivers. Modern Warfare 2 has taken interactive experience to unprecedented heights setting a new standard for entertainment.”
Activision is top dog these days, with World of Warcraft still going strong, and of course Starcraft II due out next year, another big impact franchise.
