MSI has announced two new Core i7 gaming laptops, the GT740 and GT640.

Both models will have 4GB of system memory, nVIDA GeForce GTS 250M graphics with 1GB on board, a Blu-ray drive, HDMI port and a 640GB hard drive running Windows 7.

There are two differences between the laptops. The higher end GT740 comes with a 17 inch widescreen display, whereas the GT640 is equipped with a 15.4 inch screen.

The other variation concerns the speakers. Again, the GT740 is better equipped with surround sound – four speakers and a subwoofer, apparently. The lesser model comes with stereo speakers.

Both weigh around 3kg and are done up in a rather funky looking black and red finish.

Oddly, though, the GT740 won’t be much more than the GT640, the price difference being £1399 versus £1349.

If you’re going to fork out that much, it seems fairly daft not to pay an extra £50 for the bigger screen and surround speakers.
