Google has published its yearly “zeitgeist”, a breakdown of the most popular UK searches on the site.

The “hottest topic” on Google for 2009 was the unfortunate death of Stephen Gately.

Top of the most commonly searched news stories was swine flu, followed by Susan Boyle, and then Jade Goody.

Michael Jackson, Twitter, Google Maps and Iran also made it into the top ten news stories.

The most searched for term was Facebook, BBC and then YouTube.

What does all this tell us? That we’re all very interested in social networking and celebrities. And Susan Boyle.
