BBC Trust won’t stop BBCW growth

The growth of the commercial arm of the BBC appears to have taken on a life of its own.

In a recent report from the BBC Trust, plans are suggested on how BBC Worldwide can be slowed down but, according to a senior BBC executive, the plans will not stop BBCW’s growth.

In the report it is suggested that BBCW must not buy companies unless there are no other options available.

Yet it seems that the BBC Trust has given BBCW the go ahead to buy the other fifty per cent of UKTV, which is currently owned by cable TV operator Virgin Media.

BBCW has in the past paid for stakes in production companies owned by some of the BBC’s stars such as, Simon Pegg, Steve Coogan, Henry Normal, Jeremy Clarkson and the former ITV Productions drama controller Andy Harries.
