BBC working HD demos

by David Allen

Recently there has been a lot of discussion over the quality of BBC HD content.

This is particularly interesting following the introduction of new encoders that made the bitrate drop from 16 Mbs to 9.7 Mbs.

This forty per cent drop in bitrate has led to many complaints from viewers and to calls for the BBC to return the channel to the higher bitrate as before.

The BBC will be running tests to prove that the quality of the picture on the BBC HD channle is just as good as before the equipment was changed over.

The problem for the BBC now is that the HD channel will be broadcast on Freeview too and so there will be more viewers to keep happy.
