Could Amazon be readying a chain of shops to invade the British high street?
Rumours have been spreading as fast as the destruction of the rainforest the company shares a name with, after a Sunday Times report said this might be the case yesterday.
The paper claimed that Amazon has had discussions with folks in the property business about acquiring premises.
The idea would be to have a store where customers could pick up items they’d ordered, rather than having them delivered (or not delivered, in the case of a postal strike).
Think Argos, basically. It would certainly be more convenient for large items, and people who work a lot and aren’t in to take deliveries of goods that won’t fit through a letterbox.
However, Amazon has flatly denied the rumours, saying that it doesn’t have any plans to open bricks and mortar stores anywhere in the world.
What the grapevine is saying makes sense to us, though. We shall see in due course…
