Google up to more headline grabbing tricks

Search engine Google is once again implementing mysterious stuff on its home page, which the press then gobble up and speculate about. Yes, ourselves included.

This time it isn’t a weird series of doodles, but an alteration to the ‘I’m feeling lucky’ button. If you click on this now, it brings up a timer counting down from just over 1.4 million seconds (as of this morning).

The significance of this? Well a quick bit of maths will tell you that this time period is equivalent to sixteen and a half days, or in other words, the coming of the new year.

The question is whether this is a simple countdown to 2010, or whether Google is actually counting down to the launch of something in the new year.

Or maybe it’s a timer for the end of the world, which is coming unexpectedly two years early. An alien invasion is our bet – perhaps that’s what all those HG Wells doodles were really all about.

At any rate, something might happen on the Google home page as the clock strikes midnight on the 31st, but it’s unlikely that too many people will be glued to their computers at the time.

We certainly hope not, anyway.
