Modern Warfare 2 secures Christmas number one

Yesterday – if you listen to the UK music charts – we had the battle between the X Factor’s Joe McElderry and Rage Against the Machine for the number one spot.

But never mind that (though well done Rage for striking a blow against the cynicism of the X Factor for monopolising the Xmas number one spot every year), the important question is: Which video game is the UK number one?

It is, of course, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The shooter has been top of the all-format UK charts for six weeks running now.

Fifa 10 challenged it with a last minute burst down the wing – sales were up 24% for EA’s football title – but it wasn’t enough, so the beautiful game had to settle for number two.

Nintendo was next, with Wii Fit Plus at number three (up one place), and Wii Sports Resort at number four (down two spots).

Ubisoft didn’t fare too badly, either, with Assassin’s Creed II at number five, and their game of the film Avatar securing the title for highest chart climber as it went from number 29 to 12.
